Our trip to the Pinnacles

Our first excursion out of Perth with Heike and Thomas saw us heading north to the Pinnacles and Nambung National Park. First stop: the Cataby Roadhouse along the Brand Highway. Heike and Thomas were amazed by the long road trains and the vast space of the semi-outback. And in the picture you can see an important moment - Heike's about to discover for the first time how delicious Kingston biscuits are. Now she's planning to take a suitcase full of them back to Switzerland.

Unsere ersten Ausflug war richtung Norden, nach "The Pinnacles" in Nambung National Park. Dieses Bild zeigt unsere Rest-stop an Cataby Roadhouse, und Heike isst zum ersten Mal die leckere "Kingston Biscuits" - jetzt will sie diese Kekse nach der Schweiz bringen.


At the Pinnacles, Heike's keen wildlife-spotting eyes found this big lizard, which we later discovered is a Gould's monitor. Great skin and a funky walking style!

Heike war die erste, die diese "Gould's Monitor" gesehen hat. Er bewegt sich ganz komisch aber sieht schoen aus.




And finally, some photos at the Pinnacles. This unusual desert is a really special part of Western Australia and we spent a couple of hours exploring it.

Und hier sind wir in "The Pinnacles", eine komische Wuesste mit viele Sauele ... schwer zu erklaeren. Es ist eine ganz grosse Park und wirklich einmalig.

Heike and Thomas's first day in Perth

Von dem Besuch von Heike und Thomas gibt es schon so viel zu erzaehlen, aber wir sitzen gerade lieber draussen am Pool als vor dem Computer. Diese Bilder sind von ihren ersten Tag in Perth, als wir Scarborough Beach, Reabold Hill, Kings Park und St George's Terrace besichtigt haben.

There's already so much to tell from Heike (Jan's sister) and Thomas (her husband) and their visit to Perth, but we're more interested in sitting by the pool right now than in front of the computer! These pictures are from their first day in Perth, when we visited Scarborough Beach, Reabold Hill, Kings Park and St George's Terrace.

Diese "Boab Tree" ist 750 Jahre alt. In Juli war es von 3000km-entfernte Kimberley transportiert, um den Baum von eine Baustelle zu retten.

This giant boab tree is 750 years old and was recently rescued from roadworks in the Kimberley, 3000km away and given a home in Kings Park.



In St Georges Terrace, Perth Zentrum, hat Thomas sich mit einer grossen Kangaroo befreundet.

Mein Kaktus

Mein kleiner Kaktus ist `ne Freude;
aber eher aus der Ferne.
Seine Blüten sind ganz zauberhaft,
darum habe ich ihn gerne.

Ein Problem sind seine Stacheln;
vom Fleisch her ist er weich und zart.
Erinnert mich doch all zu sehr
an ein Gesicht mit Stoppelbart.

Seine Heimat ist die Wüste;
bei Berührung er leider sticht.
So wünschte ich ihn manches Mal
dorthin, wo er zu Hause ist.

Amanda visits Penguin Island

Yes, judging by this blog our life has been a bit boring recently, but it's about to get exciting when Jan's sister Heike and her husband Thomas visit us from Switzerland. Until then, here are a couple of pictures from Amanda's excursion to Penguin Island with her students. Penguin Island is just off Rockingham, in the south of Perth, where you can see pelicans galore and some rescued penguins. Beautiful place and somewhere I must go back to with Jan.

In letzter Zeit haben wir nicht so viel neues erlebt, aber bald werden wir neue Abenteuren haben - Jans Schwester Heike und ihr Mann Thomas besuchen uns von der Schweiz. Mittlerweile ist Amanda nach Penguin Island gefahren - mit ihren Schueler. Es liegt suedlich von Perth und Pinguine und Pelikane wohnen da. Es war wunderschoen und ich habe Jan versprochen, dass wir wieder mal zusammen dahinfahren.
