Wir feiern "Australia Day"

26th January every year is a special day for Aussies: it's our national day, known as Australia Day. This year we celebrated it with our friends Matt and Sus and their son Cameron. We had great Aussie flag plates (although we ate Vietnamese-style spring rolls!) and all hung out in the pool to cope with the nearly 40 degree heat.

Australien ist eine junge und stolze Nation. Am 26. Januar jeden Jahres wird deshalb die nationale Einheit mit dem Australia Day zelebriert. Dabei werden die Straßen farbenfroh geschmückt und der Duft von Barbeque liegt in der Luft. Wie man im Bild oben sehen kann, wird natürlich auch von stilechten Papp-Service gegessen. Diesen besonderen Tag haben wir mit unseren Freunden Matt und Sus sowie ihrem Sohn Cameron, bei fast 41 Grad überwiegend im Pool verbracht.
Cameron enjoyed the pool with us too, and especially enjoyed Jan taking pics of him! Understandably so as he's very photogenic. At the end of the night we all drove down to the nearby harbour to watch some of the Australia Day fireworks.

Cameron hat den Pool sehr genossen und war auch lieb, als Jan viele Bilder von ihm gemacht hat. Später sind wir zum Hafen gefahren, um das Australia Day Feuerwerk anzuschauen.

Jan Misses the Koalas and Kangaroos

While poor Jan's been busy attending job interviews and studying English, Amanda's been working, if you can call visiting the Caversham Wildlife Park work. (She took 50 foreign teenagers with her, so it wasn't all beer and skittles).


At Caversham you can feed kangaroos (Wendy from Taiwan enjoyed doing this) and meet the koalas. They rotate the "meet and greet" duties amongst the koalas so the rest of them can keep sleeping.

And you can take a camel ride too. They're not a real Aussie animal, but they do like our climate and they run wild up north. For the record, I've promised Jan I'll take him to pat the koalas real soon.
