Our Christmas Day

Christmas outside in warm sunshine - it's not only something new to Jan, but a bit different for me, too, after 5 Christmases in the northern hemisphere. Here you can see Jan wearing his party hat, and "the women's side" of the garden at my Dad's place - relatives of my Dad's partner, Vera.

Weihnachten draußen war nicht nur neu für Jan, aber auch fremd für mich, weil ich jetzt schon fünfmal Weihnachten auf der nördliche Halbkugel gefeiert habe. Hier sieht man Jan mit seinem Weichnachtshut, und mein Vaters Garten mit Verwandten von seiner Lebensgefährtin, Vera.

Wieder war Meeresfrüchte obligatorisch! Meine Stiefnichte, Sophie, durfte ins Wasser spielen, aber für die Erwachsene gab es nur Platz für die Füße.




There was plenty of seafood on offer again (and plenty of other delicious food too). Vera's son's daughter Sophie got to play in the water, but for the adults, there was only a chance to cool our feet. (My feet are on the left!)

Christmas Eve in Australia

Christmas in Australia is definitely different to Europe. Our good friend Doris sent us this card showing Santa on the beach.

Weihnachten in Australien ist viel anders als in Europa. Unsere Freundin Doris hat uns diese Karte geschickt - Santa am Strand!


Am 24. Dezember haben wir bei Amandas Mutter gefeiert, mit Mum und Milt, Zoe und Geoff. Viele Sonne und auch viel zum Essen!


We celebrated Christmas Eve at Amanda's Mum's place, with Mum and Milt, and Zoe and Geoff. Unlike Germany it was too sunny to see! And we ate like kings, including lots of delicious prawns.

Our spare room, which we'd love to clean up, if only we could find the cellar that we had in Germany. There's just no space for all our stuff! And finally, our balcony (performing a couple of the cellar's previous functions, at the moment!).

Unser zweites Schalfzimmer, sieht ein bischen aus wie Tutenchamuns Grabkammer. Nur sind die Dinge nicht für ein Leben im Jenseits bestimmt, sondern für den Keller, genauso wie die Fahrräder auf dem Balkon.

FIFA WC Germany 2006

If we're going to review 2006, we can't leave out the biggest event of all: the FIFA World Championships. (That's soccer, for anyone who doesn't know). These made Germany go crazy, and us too, especially when Australia played better than expected. To be in Germany during the championships was perfect, apart from never getting enough sleep, and for having Italian friends (see Toni below) who insisted on celebrating when Italy beat Australia.

Eine schöne Zeit in Deutschland war bestimmt die Fussballweltmeisterschaft 2006 - toll, dass wir den Fussball in Deutschland "live" erleben konnten und ganz besonders, als Australien überragend gut gespielt hat. Leider sind sie gegen den späteren Weltmeister ausgeschieden und unsere italienischen Freunde haben sich sehr darüber gefreut (siehe Toni Bild unten).


Die australische Nationalmannschaft war in der Nähe untergebracht: unten könnt ihr sie beim Training in Öhringen sehen.

Jewel Cave

What's enroute from Augusta to Bridgetown? What you might mistake for the inside of my mouth (at least from the top picture) is in fact Jewel Cave, a massive underground surprise of stalactites and stalagmites, straws and shawls, and countless other formations whose names have left my head again. Jan and I were lucky enough to be the only people on the 3.30pm tour! And just for the record, in the gift shop Jan bought a small reference guide to Western Australian snakes. Just to be prepared, you know!


Auf dem Weg zwischen Augusta und Bridgetown (alles in südwest Australien - hier finden man eine Karte) fanden wir Jewel Cave, eine riesige Höhle, überraschenden voll mit Stalaktiten und Stalagmiten und viele andere verschiedene Felsformationen die ich gar nicht beschreiben kann. Jan und ich hatten das Glück, dass wir allein auf den 15.30 Rundgang gehen konnten. Übrigens hat Jan da im Geschenkartikelladen ein Buch über westaustralische Schlangen gekauft - nur um sicher zu sein ...

Welcome to the Gloucester Tree

Want to climb up here? Jan did, all 61 metres to the top. Amanda took photos from the bottom.
Willst du hier hoch klettern? Jan hat's geschafft, den ganzen 61m bis zum "the top of the tree". Amanda musste unten bleiben, um Bilder zu machen.


The 61m tree is the Gloucester Tree, a scary climb in the middle of the karri forests, near Pemberton. We also enjoyed a bush walk here through old karri forests with amazingly tall (and wide) old trees. And still no snakes. (A kangaroo did jump in front of us later as we drove to Bridgetown).
Der 61m Baum heißt the Gloucester Tree und steht mitten im Walde von Karri Forest , in der Nähe von Pemberton. Wir haben auch hier einen Rundgang durch den Busch genossen ... immer noch ohne Schlangen. (Ein Känguru ist auf dem Rückweg vor uns über die Straße gesprungen).

Visiting Noela, Ned and Ted in Bridgetown

Please meet Ned and Ted, two delightful dogs who we went to visit in Bridgetown recently. Oh, of course we also wanted to see their equally delightful owner Noela! (pictured below with Jan).

Hier wollen wir Euch Ned und Ted vorstellen, zwei süße Hunde die wir neulich in Bridgetown besucht haben. Natürlich wollten wir auch ihre sehr nette Besitzerin Noela sehen! (Noela sieht man auf dem Bild unten mit Jan).




Oben sieht man die Landschaft zwischen Bridgetown und Nannup. Später zeigen wir Euch den Wald! Bilder auch von Amanda und Jan bei Noela - von ihrem Haus aus hat einen tollen Ausblick über das Tal - und Amanda und Jan auf Spaziergang mit Ned und Ted.

Cape Leeuwin's lighthouse

Ah, Cape Leeuwin: the most south-westerly tip of Australia. Marked, of course, by a photogenic lighthouse and these days by a pretty good cafe too.

Cape Leeuwin ist der südwestlichste Punkt Westaustraliens. Dort gibt es auch einen ganz fotogenen Leuchtturm und ein leckeres Cafe.


Ausserdem treffen hier zwei Ozeane aufeinander (Southern Ocean und Indian Ocean), der berühmte Forschungsreisende Matthew Flinders (links) ist hier gelandet und hat von dort aus 'Terra Australis' erforscht .


Plus: the Southern and Indian Oceans meet here; and famous explorer Matthew Flinders also sailed by once.

Australian Wedding

Am 11. November 2006 hatten wir dann unsere "Australische Hochzeit". Amandas Familie hat extra fuer uns eine kleine Zeremonie vorbereitet. Weil wir nicht wussten was uns erwartet waren wir etwas aufgeregt.

Wir alle hatten viel Spass beim Feiern und es wurde viel gelacht, gegessen und getrunken. Auf dem Bild links könnt Ihre eine Pavlova sehen. Ein australisches National-Dessert in Form einer Torte. Ihr Name stammt von der legendären Ballerina Anna Pavlova. Bei einem Besuch in Australien kreierte ein namhafter Koch diese “Torte” und benannte sie nach ihr.
