I'm going to give up trying to take photos of groups of people. I think these guys planned it in advance that one person (or two!) would close their eyes for each shot.

A day out in Bouvard, Mandurah

We took the new train line from just near our place all the way down to Mandurah (much faster and cheaper than by car) and spent the day with Dad and Vera. We had lunch at the Bouvard Winery and from there could walk to Lake Clifton to see the ancient thrombolites.

Mit der neue Zuglinie sind wir nach Mandurah gefahren, um einen Tag mit Amandas Vater und seine Partnerin Vera zu verbringen. Wir haben bei Bouvard Winery gegessen und dann sind wir zu Fuss nach Lake Clifton gegangen, um die uralte "Thrombalites" zu sehen.


Then we checked the progress of Dad and Vera's house, and got a picture of our fathers with the tractor. Finally, Dad and Vera decided to try the train out too and rode with us for one stop - quite the adventure!

Dann haben wir den Fortschritt bei Dad und Veras Haus angeschaut. Diese Bild zeigt unsere Vaeter mit Barrys Traktor. Zum Schluss wollten Dad und Vera auch den Zug ausprobieren und sind kurz mit uns gefahren - ein Abenteur!

Geburtstage - Birthdays - 2008

As always, Amanda's birthday came first. Katrina came with a special chocolate birthday cake including 30+2 candles (the lion and camel are her family heirlooms!). Needless to say, this cake was incredibly delicious.

Wie immer, kam Amandas Geburtstag zuerst. Ihre Freundin Katrina hat ihr ein Schokoladenkuchen gebacken, mit 30+2 Kerze. Natuerlich hat diese Kuchen total lecker geschmeckt.

Then came Jan's big birthday. He enjoyed opening his presents, but the cats enjoyed the wrapping paper more.

Dann kam Jans grosse Geburtstag. Er hat es genossen, seine Geschenke auszupacken, aber die Katzen hatte lieber das Geschenkpapier.



Finally, Sara spent a lot of time hiding in this box. She was trying to hide from her sister and it almost worked (but she couldn't stay still long enough).

Und endlich hat die Sara viel Zeit gebracht, sich hier zu stecken. Sie wollte, dass ihre Schwester sie nicht finden koennte. Und es hat fast geklappt!

Sightseeing with Dieter: Caversham and the Swan Valley

One of the best things about having visitors is it gives us a good excuse to get out and about to some of our favourite places. You've all seen pictures of the Caversham Wildlife Park before, but here you can Dieter and the koalas - they get cuter every time.



Wenn man Besuch kriegt, ist es eine tolle Moeglichkeit, wieder unsere Lieblingsorte zu besuchen. Ihr habt schon Bilder von Caversham Wildlife Park gesehen, aber hier koennt Ihr Dieter und die Koalas sehen. Die Koalas werden jedes mal noch suesser!

We also had a day out in the Swan Valley, the wine-growing region of Perth. This photo shows Jan and Dieter at the Sitella Winery where my sister Zoe got married.

Our cats are growing ...

I've had a few requests for some more pictures of our two best friends, Sara and Lucy. They're getting bigger but are still young enough to think that chasing their tail is the best game ever, as demonstrated by Sara who loves running around in the bathtub.


Hier sind noch ein Paar Bilder von unsere zwei beste Freundinen, Sara und Lucy. Sie werden immer groesser aber sind noch jung genug zu glauben, dass den Schwanz zu fangen macht sehr viel Spass. Sara demonstriert hier diesen Spass in der Badewanne.


Lucy's a big fan of a rolled up Alfoil ball (and doesn't mind doing some advertising for Coles, either). Just don't try and take that ball away from her.

Lucy spielt sehr gern mit Baelle, die von Aluminium-Folie gemacht sind - sie macht auch gern Werbung fuer die Coles Supermarket. Aber versuch' nicht mal den Ball wegzunehmen!

Dieter ist angekommen - Jan's Dad has arrived

Last Wednesday evening, Jan's father, Dieter, arrived in Perth - our first German visitor. Seemingly immune to jet-lag, he's been following us all over the city. Here you can see he and Jan standing in Kings Park, overlooking the Perth skyline, and below, Dieter is meeting some large kangaroos in St George's Terrace.

Letzte Woche ist Dieter, Jans Vater, in Perth angekommen - unser erster Besuch aus Deutschland. Jetzt zeigen wir ihn ein bisschen von Perth. Oben sieht man Jan und Dieter in Kings Park, mit dem Blick auf Perth im Hintergrund. Unten, man sieht Dieter mit ein Paar Kaengurus in St Georges Terrace.

Australia Day in Sholl Avenue

It's a while back now, but I've been meaning to post some pictures of our lovely Australia Day celebration from January 26. My friend Katrina's parents hosted their street's Australia Day breakfast and kindly invited us to join them. The top pic shows the crowds gathering (with champagne) as the breakfast begins.

Seit langem wollte ich ueber Australia Day berichten, am 26. Januar. Die Eltern von meine Freundin, Katrina, haben uns zum Street-Party (zum Fruehstueck) eingeladet. Oben sieht man die Leute von Sholl-strasse, die schon Sekt trinken.

Then the official flag-raising ceremony began, with Katrina's father, David, MC-ing the event and leading a singing of the national anthem. Awards were given out to people who'd lived in the street the longest and to new Australians like Jan, for his first "official" attendance at the Sholl Avenue Australia Day party!

Dann ist die Fahne hochgezogen worden und Katrinas Vater David hat uns geleitet, die australische Hymne zu singen. Es gab eine Preisverleihung und Jan hat ein Geschenk gekriegt, weil er zum ersten mal beim Australia Day Party war. Das Ganze hat viel Spass gemacht!

With the official part of the day out of the way, we all moved into the backyard and enjoyed a big barbecue breakfast together. Very Australian!

Nach dem Zeremonie, sind wir alle zum Hinterhof gegangen und haben fuer Fruehstueck gegrillt. Sehr australisch!

Two new additions: Sara and Lucy

Introducing the two new additions to our family: four-month-old black-and-white cats named Sara (above) and Lucy (below). They're sisters who we adopted from the Cat Haven, a rescue centre right next to Jan's work.

Lass mich unsere 2 Neulinge vorstellen: zwei Kätzchen die bereits 4 Monate alt sind, und heissen Sara (oben) und Lucy (unten). Wir haben die zwei Schwestern bei Cat Haven adoptiert, ein Tierheim neben Jans Arbeitsplatz.

Katrina and Amanda make nougat ...

Life in Australia isn't all swimming pool and beach outings: sometimes we even do quite domestic things. For example, earlier this week when my friend Katrina (seen busy in our kitchen) and I decided we should learn how to make nougat.


Das Leben in Australien ist nicht nur schwimmen und Strand - manchmal machen wir auch ganz normale Sachen in der Küche. Zum Beispiel, letzte Woche haben ich und meine Freundin Katrina (im Bild) versucht, Nougat zu machen.

Turns out that making your own nougat is quite tricky. We didn't have 100% success this time but we were both particularly taken with the pretty patterns we achieved on our electric mixer. And we know what to do differently at our next attempt.


Jetzt wissen wir, dass es nicht so einfach ist, Nougat selbst zu machen. Obwohl wir nicht ganz erfolgreich waren, haben wir beide ganz gern das Muster auf das Mixgerät angeschaut. Und nächstes Mal wissen wir schon, wie das ganze besser geht.
